Cockroaches - Oriental
Oriental cockroaches are found throughout the world and is often
referred to as the "waterbug". Adult Oriental cockroach males are
usually about 1" long; females usually average 1 1/4" in length. The
Oriental cockroach is shiny black to dark reddish brown in color. The
male Oriental cockroach has wings that cover only about 75% of the
abdomen. The female has no extended wings (wing pads only present at
base). They are not able to fly.
Nymphs are shiny reddish brown. Egg capsules are reddish
brown when deposited, then change to black, and are about 3/8" long.
They contain 8 eggs per side (total 16 eggs) but capsules are not as
distinctly furrowed between eggs.
The female carries the egg capsule for about 30 hours. It
is then either dropped or glued to something near a warm protected food
source. The female Oriental cockroach will produce about 8 egg capsules
during her life. Developmental time from egg to adult takes about 575
days (males) to 600 days (females). Adult males live about 4-5 months.
Females live about 1-6 months.
The oriental cockroach is often comfortable living
outdoors. It may be found under debris, stones and leaf litter. It may
also live in porch and wall voids. It typically enters structures
through door thresholds, sliding glass doors, unscreened ventilators,
or through sewers and drains. They are found indoors in damp, dark
places such as basements or sewers, cellars, crawl spaces, and on upper
floors near water pipes that they use for climbing.
Oriental cockroaches feed on all kinds of decaying matter, but prefer
to feed on starchy foods. People dislike these insects because of their
strong "roachy" odor and because they feed on filth.
